The artificial archipelago itself consists of 300 islands of varying sizes and shapes, surrounded by a massive breakwater. They are arranged in a way that, when viewed from above, resembles a map of the world.

The project is being developed by Nakheel Properties, a major developer known for creating the iconic palm-shaped islands, which have significantly extended Dubai's sandy beaches.

The total area of the archipelago is 54 sq. km, with individual island sizes ranging from 23,000 sq. m to 84,000 sq. m, and distances between islands varying from 50 m to 100 m.

The map-shaped island complex is located approximately 4 km off the coast of Dubai, opposite the Jumeirah district, known for its beaches and luxury hotels. The community is in the sea, so there is no direct road access. The journey by boat or yacht from the coast to the island community takes between 15 and 30 minutes. The nearest jetty is The Fishing Harbour in the Jumeirah 1 area.

The main arteries of Dubai, such as Al Sufouh Road and Sheikh Zayed Road, pass close to the marina and provide access to the archipelago.
