Dubai has adopted a new law regulating urban planning. It was initiated by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, Ruler of Dubai.
The new law is designed to improve the quality of the urban environment in Dubai and help create better living conditions. The law also introduces the obligation to monitor the harm caused to the environment.
According to the law, a new Supreme Committee for Urban Planning will appear in Dubai, which will include representatives of the authorities responsible for urban planning in one way or another. The members of the Executive Council of Dubai will appoint the composition of the committee.
Now Dubai has a Supreme City Planning Committee. It was created by the Executive Council in 2021. This committee will continue to temporarily perform its duties until a new composition is formed.
Another innovation is the consolidation of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan as the official development plan of the city. In particular, it includes goals for more efficient use of resources and the creation of a “20-minute city” environment (where everything you need will be within walking distance). The new law assigns responsibility for following the plan to the Dubai Municipality, giving it the opportunity to coordinate the actions of the authorities, including those that control the progress of urban development and interact with the administrations of free economic zones.
